ok so I have in mind a fanpro visual novel slash interactive story that I'd like to sell (not the one I link to in my signature, that one will be free). the question is, would anyone want to buy it?
some info:
What would the story be about?
The basic premise is that all the fanpros are being kept in a laboratory for reasons unknown. The player's goal is to gather bits and pieces of information in the form of various files and recordings, and piece together exactly what the fanpros are and what they're doing here. The more times you play through the game, the more data you unlock, including information on the organization keeping the fanpros, and the identity of the player themself.
The game will feature every fanpro from the first generation, and will have at least 101 endings (I still haven't decided whether to make a good ending and a bad ending for each fanpro, which would bring the ending count to 202. On the one hand, the game would be more fun that way. On the other hand, 202 endings is a heck of a lot. 101 endings is a heck of a lot. like seriously this is going to be a lot of work)
The game will be 100% text. Yes, I know it's not much of a visual novel without any pictures, but I'm working with what I can do. I checked the prices for commissioning someone to draw for me, and I only have 200 dollars saved up. Even if only commissioned one character sprite for each fanpro, and paid 10 dollars per sprite, that's 1000 dollars. Art costs a lot, folks. I'll probably commission someone to draw me a title screen, but nothing other than that. There may or may not be music; I could definitely compose some tracks, but it depends on how long that would delay the release of the game.
That's not enough information for me to consider buying it.
I'll be releasing a demo in a few days. Although it will only have 1/5 of the content of the regular game, that's still a lot. This game is pretty huge guys.
The demo will demonstrate the basic gameplay, and have 20 endings, featuring notable fanpros such as 0001, 0003, 0041, 0063. . . I'm just listing some fanpros who seem to be popular-ish that have their ending in the demo.
Why are you considering selling it?
Visual novels, interactive stories, whatever you like to call them. . . making them combines two of my greatest passions: writing and programming. This is mostly a test to see if I could make money off of doing something I love. I'm using the fanpro fandom as a sort of. . . I'm not sure how to put it. A stepping stone? The fanpro fandom is big right now, and people would be more likely to buy a game with fanpro characters than characters they know nothing about, even though technically they don't know anything about fanpro characters other than what they look like, and depending on headcanons, not even that. . . idk basically the fanpro fandom gives me the opportunity to write original fiction and fanfiction at the same time and maybe have some extra money to buy fanpro merchandise of my own. I'm not making a lot of sense right now.
Basically, I have no income right now, I'd like to have some income, I love making visual novels/interactive stories, there's a market for fanpro items. I know there's a market because I am part of that market, dangit, and when people start selling prints I want to buy some.
How much will it cost?
Price is a tricky business; nobody wants to buy something that's too expensive, and yet often if you price too low, things won't sell; people link quality with price. I'm thinking of selling it at 5 dollars. Not too high, so that people who might not have a lot of extra money could buy it, but not too low, either.
Anything else?
Off the top of my head, nope!
If you have any questions, anything at all, please ask and I will do my best to answer!
